There has been a defensive
fortification on this spot overlooking the River Tyne for nearly 2000 years,
although flint flakes and a stone axe head found hint at prehistoric activity.
From the 2nd Century to around the 5th a Roman Fort called 'Pons Aelius'. From
the 8th Century the site of the fort is believed to be used as a Christian
cemetery. The first castle, 'New Castle upon Tyne', was built from 1080 by
William the Conqueror's eldest son, Robert Curthouse. Around 100 years later the
motte & bailey structure was replaced by stone. This gave the castle the keep, a
gatehouse and a curtain wall. Later on King John (1207-1216) made an addition of
an aisled hall and King Henry III (1247-1250) added a barbican known as the
Black Gate.
Around the 14th Century the Town Hall was built and the Castle was out of the
new defensive area and became militarily redundant. Few repairs were done and by
1589 the building was unused. In 1618 the castle was leased by James I to a
courtier, Alexander Stephenson, who allowed houses to be built within the Castle
walls. It was refortified during the Civil War and was the last stronghold of
the Royalist defences of the town during the siege of 1644. The Keep has been
restored on a number of occasions, 1810, 1812, 1848, 1960's and the 1980's and
is looked after to this day being one of Newcastle's premier visitor
attractions.
In May 2006 a charity investigation
was conducted at the Keep where an apparent apparition was snapped. The charity
night was attended by many local investigators who appear to have no explanation
for the dark shadow that was seen. Other paranormal experiences witnessed have
been:
o Unseen footsteps heard
o Strange unexplained mists appearing
o Cold spots which suddenly disappear
o People being touched by unseen hands
o A lady been see in the Queens Chamber
o Chanting heard around the Keep and Chapel
We are certainly looking forward to investigating one of England's oldest
prestigious Castles, come and join us if you're brave enough?
