The "Galleries of Justice" at Shire Hall in Nottingham has been part of history since the 18th century.  Three centuries of crime, punishment and law are embedded into the very fabric of the building and the ghosts of some former prisoners and wardens are said to have never left.

Shire Hall is a grade II listed building and comprises of two Victorian courtrooms, a prison dating from 1800, a prisoners exercise yard, cave cells, an 1833 prison, a women's prison with a bath house and laundry, an Edwardian police station not forgetting the medieval cave system.  This is a huge location with many hiding places...

The Galleries of Justice gives you an unrivalled tour through three centuries of crime, punishment and law. Located in and around the magnificent Shire Hall, a grade II listed site comprising two Victorian courtrooms, an 1800 prison, prisoners exercise yard, cave cells (known as the pits!), an 1833 prison, women's prison with bath house and laundry, medieval cave system and an Edwardian police station.

The Galleries also boast an impressive police exhibition in the police station, of which was still used up until 1985.  There are many artifacts from the history of policing, as we know some spirit energies find an affinity with personal possessions.  Perhaps there is still an energy of a 19th century 'Peeler' policing Shire Hall?

As we investigate you will see the punishments handed out to breakers of the law.  The prisoners were given real hard labour and made to pay for their crimes.  Outside in the exercise yard you can still see graffiti from the 19th century.  It was out in the exercise yard that the team from Most Haunted witnessed shadows of footsteps passing by and where Derek Acorah connected with a negative energy chasing a small boy around.  Derek said that the boy would sometimes be seen passing through the wall trying to escape...

Other reported paranormal phenomena is:

  • Whisperings heard in ears

  • Screams and yells heard

  • Cold blasts if air from nowhere

  • Cell doors slamming shut for no reason

  • Light anomalies

  • Many EVP recordings

  • ...and more
